Abundant Grace Community Church Sunday Worship Service LIVESTREAM Jonah: The Relentless Love of God June 14, 2026 Phil Courson “Salvation Belongs to the Lord” Jonah 2 Introduction Salvation Belongs to the Lord Alone I. God Sometimes Brings Us Low So We Will Look Up (Jonah 1:1-2) “Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying, ‘I called out to the Lord, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Shoel I cried and you heard my voice.” A difficult experience, a painful loss, a broken plan, or a season of suffering may actually be the means God uses to awaken us spiritually. “It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.” Psalm 119:71 Jonah says, “I called out to the Lord… and he answered me.” What grace! Jonah had rebelled against God, yet God still heard him. That is the mercy of our God. He hears repentant sinners. II. God Is Sovereign Even Over the Storm (Jonah 2:3–6a) “For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas…” Jonah acknowledges something important here. Jonah recognizes the sovereign hand of God behind every circumstance. God was ruling over all of it. Jonah’s descent into the deep foreshadows Jesus’s greater descent. Jesus entered not merely the waters of affliction but the depths of divine judgment. On the cross, Jesus bore the full fury of God’s wrath against sin. III. God Brings Deliverance When Hope Seems Gone (Jonah 2:6b–7) “Yet you brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God.” That word “yet” is filled with hope. Jonah says, “I went down… yet You brought me up.” Jonah reaches the end of himself. “When my life was fainting away, I remembered the Lord.” Sometimes God strips away every false refuge until He alone remains. The point is not that Jonah suddenly became worthy. The point is that God is merciful. IV. Idols Always Fail, but God Never Fails (Jonah 2:8) “Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love.” Jonah now contrasts idols with the mercy of God. An idol is anything we trust more than God. Idols always disappoint. The phrase “steadfast love” refers hesed to God’s covenant mercy—His faithful love toward undeserving sinners. This steadfast love is fully revealed in Jesus Christ. V. Salvation Belongs to the Lord (Jonah 2:9) “Salvation belongs to the Lord!” All of salvation belongs to the Lord. God planned salvation. God accomplished salvation. God applies salvation. From beginning to end, salvation is by grace. Salvation belongs to the Lord. If God saves, then God keeps. VI. God’s Grace Leads to Obedience (Jonah 2:9–10) “What I have vowed I will pay.” Jonah now speaks of obedience. Grace does not produce apathy; it produces worshipful obedience. When we truly understand the mercy of God, we desire to follow Him. Obedience is not the cause of salvation, it’s the fruit of salvation. v.10 - “And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.” Even the fish obeyed God better than Jonah had. God commands creation, and creation responds. The fish released Jonah exactly when God ordained. Jesus is the greater Jonah. Conclusion
