(Blocked) Paths to Dedollarization | Radhika Desai and Paolo Nogueira Batista

Ever since the weaponization of the dollar system against Russia, its problems have become widely discussed and de-dollarization has become a buzz word. However, the dedollarization process seems stalled. Meanwhile, the difficulties of the dollar continue to mount, so much so that there is now open discussion in the mainstream media of how long the dollar system can last, a subject that was taboo until recently. So what are the problems of the dollar system? Did they begin with the weaponization of the dollar against Russia? What would alternatives to the system look like? Is it simply a case of another country’s currency taking its place? This is the topic for Radhika Desai, who has written extensively on the dollar system in her prescient Geopolitical Economy: After US Hegemony, Globalization and Empire (2013) [1], her Capitalism, Coronavirus and War: A Geopolitical Economy [2] and in many articles and Paulo Nogueira Batista, a Brazilian economist, former Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) who also served at the New Development Bank (NDB) in Shanghai, advisor to Brazilian government, advising debt issues and author of numerous works on international finance and de-dollarization.
