In this video, Dr. Ankit Gupta, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon at Panache Aesthetics, Delhi, explains everything about this procedure, from causes to treatment, real patient results, and recovery. Many individuals, both children and adults, experience prominent ear deformity, where their ears stick out more than usual from the side of the head. This condition, commonly known as “Bat Ear,” can affect one ear or both and often leads to self-consciousness or teasing during childhood. Though it has no impact on hearing, it can cause psychological distress and low confidence, especially in social situations or schools. So, why does prominent ear deformity occur? Normally, our ears sit at an angle of about 20 degrees from the head. When this angle widens to 30–45 degrees, the ears begin to appear more prominent. This is often due to two main structural reasons: Absent Anti-helical Fold – The anti-helix (the inner curved ridge of the ear) fails to form properly, causing the ear to appear open or unfolded. Enlarged Conchal Bowl – The bowl-shaped part of the ear, known as the concha, is too deep or large, pushing the entire ear outward. When one or both of these features are present, the ears appear to stick out prominently. This is a congenital (by birth) condition and not related to any injury or hearing defect. In today’s video, Dr. Ankit Gupta presents a real case of a patient with right-sided Bat Ear deformity. The patient’s right ear had both issues – an absent anti-helical fold and an enlarged conchal bowl – making it more prominent than the left. Using advanced Otoplasty techniques, Dr. Gupta corrected the shape, recreated the missing fold, and repositioned the ear closer to the head to achieve perfect symmetry. About the Surgery: Otoplasty or Bat Ear Correction is a minor surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia. The patient is fully conscious but feels no pain due to numbing injections. The surgery takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours for both ears, or around an hour for one side. A small incision is made behind the ear, hidden within the natural crease between the ear and the head. Through this incision, the surgeon reshapes the ear cartilage, recreates the anti-helical fold, and reduces the size of the conchal bowl if needed. Using Mustardé or Furnas sutures, the ear is permanently fixed in a more natural position. Since the incision is hidden behind the ear, the scar remains completely invisible. The patient goes home the same day, and the recovery is smooth. Post-Surgery Care & Recovery: A light dressing or bandage is applied for 4–5 days to protect the ears. Stitches may be self-dissolving or removed after a week. Mild swelling or bruising subsides within 7–10 days. Patients can resume normal activities in a week and strenuous exercise after two weeks. Final results are visible within 3–4 weeks, once swelling completely settles. Common Questions Answered: Are there visible scars? No. The incision lies behind the ear and is hidden within the natural crease. Once healed, the scar is practically invisible. Are results permanent? Yes. The sutures used to hold the ear in its new position are permanent. As long as there is no trauma, the correction lasts a lifetime. Can adults undergo Otoplasty? Absolutely. The surgery is suitable for both adults and children above the age of 7 years when ear cartilage becomes firm enough for correction.
