[I respectfully suggest that this video be widely disseminated] RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION IN THE HAND: WHY IS THIS DISCUSSION OCCURRING ON SOCIAL MEDIA NOW? Some Catholics, reasonably dissatisfied with the liturgical abuses or moral ambiguities that are occurring today, or outraged by the words or attitudes of Pope Francis, seem to be taking advantage of this situation to utter all sorts of exaggerations, and in some cases, outrages, on social media. These exaggerations do nothing to proclaim our love for the Eucharist, much less the unity we must seek as believers. I find this attitude reprehensible and think it is necessary to go further: to better consider what is happening and, in any case, moderate our language. Neither panic nor scandal are good guides. MY OWN EXPERIENCE WITH GIVING HOLY COMMUNION IN THE HAND My experience as a priest in giving Communion in the hand has generally been very bad, especially due to the mistreatment of the Eucharistic species due to neglect of the particles. My wish would be that Holy Communion be always given in the mouth and, as far as possible, on the knees. This is the best expression of the GIFT nature of the Bread of Heaven, and of our indigence and unworthiness before the holiness that is shared with us. However, I do not agree with those who say that receiving Communion in the hand necessarily entails sin. Nor can I agree with those who insult our bishops on this issue. WHAT THE CHURCH HAS SAID ABOUT COMMUNION IN THE HAND In short: it is permitted in those places where the Episcopal Conferences have requested it from the Holy See (today there are many countries). Maximum care is required, but authorization exists. There are very good articles that I have collected and saved for reference. From the Congregation for Divine Worship, at the Vatican Curia (which always recognizes the right of the faithful to receive Communion in the mouth): https://www.evernote.com/shard/s254/n... This is a study published on CATHOLIC.NET: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s254/s... This is from EWTN.COM: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s254/n... This is the Declaration of the COLOMBIAN EPISCOPAL CONFERENCE, regarding the current risk of a pandemic (both methods are allowed, by hand or mouth): https://www.evernote.com/shard/s254/s... WHAT TO DO THEN Avoid shocking yourself and causing panic in others. Be prudent in your thoughts and language. Follow our conscience when receiving the Holy Eucharist, always in a spirit of adoration, humility, gratitude, and communion with the whole Church.
