Although the State Historical Museum is closed for renovations, we manage to find the hidden statue of Lenin out back—worth a peek for history buffs! 🛒 Exploring Osh Bazaar: Bishkek’s Bustling Market We wander through Osh Bazaar (Ош базары), a lively market with everything from produce to dry cheese balls (a local favorite, though not ours!). We pick up fresh dates for a bargain, staying alert to avoid any “fake police” scams—a handy travel tip for fellow visitors. 🎲 Abandoned Casino & Victory Monument Curious for something offbeat, we check out an abandoned casino and nightclub, now filled with graffiti and broken glass. Right across the street stands the Victory Monument, with its three yurt-shaped arcs and eternal flame, honoring families awaiting their loved ones’ return from WWII. 🌳 Erkindik Park: Our Favorite Green Escape Daily jogs and strolls in Erkindik Park quickly make it our top green space in Bishkek. With parallel boulevards shaded by trees, ice cream vendors, and even swings, it’s a vibrant slice of city life, perfect for any time of day. 🛁 Public Bath Experience: Hot, Cold & Local A highlight for us is the local public bathhouse experience. Gender-segregated and featuring saunas, steam rooms, and icy “polar plunge” pools, it’s refreshingly invigorating—and affordable at just 300 Som. 🛼 Roller Skating Fun We try our luck at roller skating (spoiler: we’re no pros). It’s a playful activity in the city, and we’re soon reminded that we’re better on ice skates than roller skates—but it’s all part of the fun! 🎶 Opera, Ballet & Coffee Breaks We narrowly miss the start of opera and ballet season, but we enjoy plenty of coffee breaks at trendy cafes like Q Cafe, indulging in crumbly Dvorak cake and strawberry muffins—an ideal midday treat. 🥾 Mountain Hiking with the Trekking Union For an outdoor escape, we join a hike to the nearby mountains with the Trekking Union. Pro tip: Be ready to sign a quirky waiver (no running away or drinking on the trail!) and prepare for epic scenery and maybe even soggy shoes. 🧀 Trying Kumis: The National Drink We bravely sample kymyz (Кымыз / Kumis), the famed fermented mare’s milk that Bishkek is named after.
