Why Were Dinosaurs So Much Bigger Than Modern Animals?

Some sauropods reached weights of 60 to 70 tonnes, growing into the largest land animals that have ever walked the Earth. But how did biology produce something that size? And why has nothing in the 66 million years since the asteroid come close to matching them? In this video, we break down the four biological superpowers that allowed sauropods to shatter the size limits of land animals. Their bones were not solid like mammal bones. Many were hollow and filled with air, creating lightweight skeletons strong enough to support gigantic bodies. Their breathing system worked more like a bird’s than a mammal’s, using one-way airflow and air sacs to move fresh oxygen through the body with incredible efficiency. Their long necks allowed them to feed across huge areas of vegetation without constantly moving their massive bodies, saving enormous amounts of energy. And their growth rates were explosive, allowing young sauropods to pass through the dangerous vulnerable stage far faster than large mammals do today. Together, these traits created a biological machine built for size. Mammals after the dinosaurs never had the same combination. Elephants, rhinos, hippos, and even Paraceratherium reached the limits of mammalian biology — but sauropods broke through those limits completely.
