The Hakata Gion Yamakasa is a seasonal summer event in Hakata. It is not something we take for granted, as it is so close to us. Eighty years ago, the flames of war during the Great Fukuoka Air Raid burned everything in Hakata to the ground. The Yamakasa, the soul of Hakata people, was no exception. We interviewed an elder who knows about the Yamakasa, which came to a halt during the war, and how it has since been revived.
