1934 Crosley Dual Fiver Deluxe A Model 5V1

In this video, we attempt an extensive repair project of a Crosley 5V1 5-tube two-band superheterodyne "tombstone" radio from 1934. The radio was in extremely poor condition, with severe moisture damage to the cabinet, missing trim pieces, a rusty/dirty chassis filled with spider webs and mud as well as various mechanical/electrical issues. We undertake the challenge of not only repairing the electronic components but also thoroughly cleaning the metal chassis beyond our typical repairs. We provide a historical context about the Crosley Radio Corporation at its zenith in 1934, highlighting the significance of the 5V1 radio as part of the affordable "Fiver" series during the Great Depression. The repair process includes detailed inspection and cleaning of the chassis and components, troubleshooting electrical faults, replacing damaged or out-of-spec resistors, capacitors, tubes and repairing or replacing mechanical parts such as the band selector switch. Despite challenges such as missing parts, broken switches and rusty trimmer screws, the radio was successfully powered up and demonstrated working reception capability, though with some limitations due to rusted IF trimmers. We also discusses modifications made by previous owners, such as the substitution of an 80 tube with a 5Y3 rectifier tube socket and emphasize the importance of cleaning and testing before deep restoration. The video concludes with the radio in working condition, cleaned and partially restored, but with further work needed on cabinet restoration and fine tuning. We plan to continue the project in future episodes.
