In the new RND podcast "If They Knew," an alleged private conversation between Axel Springer CEO Matthias Döpfner and Chancellor Friedrich Merz was marketed as a sensation. The gist of the story: Döpfner supposedly put massive pressure on Merz to drop the "firewall" against the AfD – culminating in the dramatic statement, "You'll regret this, Mr. Chancellor." The truth: The entire conversation never took place. The text message was a forgery, impossible in terms of both timing and content. Even the government called it "absurd rumors." How could experienced journalists in the capital have fallen for such an obvious case of telephone? What role does one's own worldview play when a story is simply too good to be true?
