The Army Museum, located within the Korea Military Academy in Gongneung-dong, Seoul, is the oldest military museum in Korea. The Army Museum, which began in 1956 as the Korea Military Academy Memorial Hall, was designed by architect Kim Chung-up. Kim Chung-up reportedly began designing the museum with the goal of creating a masterpiece comparable to the French Embassy. The Army Museum is a cylindrical stone structure, embodying Kim Chung-up's signature curvaceous aesthetic. The museum's interior is designed to follow a circular flow, with the central exhibition hall remaining open, like a courtyard. The exhibition hall displays a diverse range of military artifacts from ancient times, the Joseon Dynasty, and modern times. It provides a glimpse into Korea's wartime history and the evolution of weaponry. On the hill behind the museum stands Cheongheondang, the former headquarters of the Three Military Commands from the late Joseon Dynasty. Originally located on the site of the Government Complex in Gwanghwamun, it was moved to its current location in 1967. It is said that during the relocation, Cheongheondang was also used as an exhibition hall for the Korea Military Academy Memorial Hall. The Myeongseongtap (Teaching Tower) was built in 1986 to commemorate the alumni of the Korea Military Academy who contributed to overcoming the national crisis. It was built 64 meters high to symbolize the academy. The Memorial Hall is located on the basement and first floor of the Myeongseongtap. Throughout the years, graduates of the Korea Military Academy have played a leading role in protecting our nation's national defense, but they have also held positions at the heart of power, writing a history of shame. The Army Museum, which began at the Korea Military Academy Memorial Hall and has documented the history of our nation's national defense, shouldn't we now prepare for a new future, drawing on the lessons of the past war?
