Two Assam Rifles personnel killed in suspected ambush in Manipur's Ukhrul

According to police, the attack took place at around 1:30 pm near Nungshang Kong under Ukhrul Police Station, about 16 km from Ukhrul town. A convoy of Assam Rifles vehicles was travelling through the area when the third vehicle in the convoy came under attack. Two personnel who sustained injuries later succumbed to them. They have been identified as Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Rifleman Chandra Mohan Singh, who was driving the vehicle. Security forces rushed to the spot following which a gunfire exchanged broke out with the suspected attackers. A video circulating on social media showed security personnel carrying what appeared to be a rocket launcher. The incident reportedly caused panic among villagers working in nearby paddy fields. Local sources said the exchange of fire continued for several hours. Traffic along National Highway 202 remained suspended for hours following the incident, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded. The Government of Manipur condemned the killing of the two Assam Rifles personnel. In a statement, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and said those responsible would be identified, arrested and dealt with according to the law.
