Episode 07 - The Threat Landscape
Every adventuring party makes the same mistake exactly once. They picture a single enemy. The dark lord at the end of the dungeon. Then they walk through the door and discover the truth: there is no single enemy. There's an entire ecosystem of them — different creatures, different motives, different methods. The mistake newcomers to security make is identical. They picture "the hacker." One guy. Hood up, dark room, green text. That picture is so wrong it will actively hurt your ability to defend yourself. In this episode we draw the map of the enemy, faction by faction: Cybercriminals — the largest faction by an enormous margin, motivated purely by money Nation-states — unlimited budgets, custom weaponry, and years of patience (Advanced Persistent Threats) Hacktivists — driven by ideology, not profit — unpredictable because grievances don't do cost-benefit analysis Insiders — the threat that already has a key, because you gave it one Script kiddies — unskilled attackers holding sharp weapons they didn't have to forge The core lesson: there is no such thing as "the hacker" — there is a landscape How the threat landscape finally makes "likelihood" a real number instead of a guess This episode completes Arc 1 — The Kingdom. Next: Arc 2, The Monster Manual. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Nat20 InfoSec is an information security education series built for people who think in terms of kingdoms, adventuring parties, and campaigns.
