The Kinko Bay Summer Night Fireworks Festival is scheduled to launch 15,000 fireworks, including 2-shaku fireworks. Most of these fireworks are made by fireworks artisans in Kagoshima. Taiyo Fireworks, with its factory in Hiyoshicho, Hioki City, has been involved in the Summer Night Fireworks Festival since its inception. Their strength lies in their ability to handle everything from production to launch, and they are a leading company in the industry, manufacturing fireworks for festivals around the country. Shogo Haraguchi oversees the on-site team of approximately 50 fireworks artisans. At this time of year, all employees are involved in preparations for fireworks festivals around the country. At this time of year, they are making fireworks for the autumn festivals. Factory manager Tanikichi is a fireworks craftsman who has devoted his life to this field. He was working on arranging stars in a mold. What are stars? Each light that shoots up when the fireworks are launched represents a star. The core of the stars is made of, of all things, rapeseed!? The rapeseed is coated in gunpowder and then dried, and the process is repeated to gradually make larger stars. The stars are arranged evenly in a semicircular paper container called a "tamahari." At this point, other long, thin pieces of gunpowder are placed between the stars. This is called wariyaku, and is the gunpowder that makes the firework explode. If you just put a star in there, it will just ignite. It seems that the size of the star, the strength of the wariyaku inside, and the paper used when packing the firework all have a bearing on the balance of the beautiful firework. And the "tamahari" process, in which layers of kraft paper are pasted together, increases the pressure inside the firework, creating a repulsive force when it explodes, giving more momentum to the sparks that spread when it explodes. After repeated "ball pasting" and drying, the fireworks are finally complete! The 2-shaku fireworks that will be launched at Kinko Bay Summer Night are said to weigh 70 kg! It takes about six months to mix the gunpowder, star the fireworks, prepare the fireworks, and then paste the fireworks. There are several companies in Kyushu that make 2-shaku fireworks, including Taiyo Fireworks. On August 23rd, 2-shaku fireworks, filled with the skill and passion of artisans, will light up the night sky of Kagoshima City.
