SMW Custom Boss - Ultima Hawkmouth (~omh~ Final Boss)
The final battle of ~omh~. This is actually a showcase of the entire last boss, which includes the Tower of the Exits and the Slay Bell. This fight is a homage to the Final Fantasy VI final boss with the Tower of the Gods, right down to using all 5 parts of Dancing Mad. Here, however, it doesn't take nearly as long as it's not an RPG, so you don't really hear any of the parts of the song for that long outside of Phase 4. For the longest time, I wasn't quite so sure how I was going to go about the first 3 phases of the battle. The Tower of the Exits and Slay Bell were one of the last things coded for the initial version of ~omh~. I pondered for maybe a day before coming up with the idea of having the first two phases to add a set of tires to the tower. So...this is basically Howl's Moving Tower. The bell is the result of me remembering last minute that there was one more exit I could add to the roster of the Secondary Exits (the entire game has other Mario goal bosses). If this is going to be a battle against a tower...it might as well be a bell tower! A lot of people thought this was the Cat Bell from SM3DW. While technically correct, I think that powerup was actually a reference to the Bell from Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins. I called it the "Slay Bell" because it's a pun on sleigh bell, and it wants to slay you dead. Meanwhile, Ultima Hawkmouth is actually pretty simple all things considered. I actually took some mental notes from how Wyatt talked about the Omega Fennel fight from Casio Mario World in that she only has 3 moves that only increase in intensity. So I figured this is the approach I would take for the ~omh~ final boss, though it's not one-to-one. Ultima Hawkmouth has 4 attacks; each hit increases how fast he can pull them off. Some say he's unhinged, and that's not inaccurate (especially during the final hit). He actually has fewer moves than the R-ACK final boss "Goaldobadorrer," but it is WAY harder in comparison. In his attack pool, he'll attack 3 times from a pool of three attacks that can be selected, though never repeated twice in a row (it can appear twice in the same phase): a) Impound Kick, where he'll rise from his current position and use his heel to slam down on the ground. Just pay attention when he goes up in the air. b) Speed Dash, where he'll pick one side of the arena and then immediately dash ahead to the other side of the screen. I didn't actually do it in the battle, but you actually can spinjump on him, which makes this attack easier to dodge. c) "THE SMASH," where he'll rise in the air, and aim his body directly at Mario's position at a ludicrous speed and slam his fist down on the ground. People struggle with this attack in particular, but my trick is to jump and then fall just under him as he shoots ahead. The hitbox is way smaller while he's in the air, so you can take advantage of that as you avoid the slam. Once he attacks 3 times, he'll then switch to try to shoot a projectile at you. In the first hit, it's a shell. Every other time, he'll throw a shot that can hurt you if touched, and the amount of these he throws before a shell is the amount of damage he sustained. But yes, he's incredibly weak to shells. During his final hit, all of his attacks are on overdrive. His normal movement changes to rapidly moving left and right, picking one of 16 spots on screen. His impound kick doesn't change too much. It's just incredibly fast. The Speed Dash and THE SMASH, if chosen, are performed 3 times in quick succession. Unfortunately, in this run, you don't see the "final hit" speed dash. The entire final battle is probably the most cinematic boss I've done. Of course, the boss isn't for everybody; I made this fight in this specific way because this is the type of 'hard boss' I like fighting. Since ~omh~ ended up being more difficult than R-ACK, I felt I needed to match it, so it's a satisfying finish. ... This video got copyrighted (of course), however, I wanted to maintain the accuracy of the reference. I kept monetization on, so I get a small bit of profit, but I acknowledge that this is funding for Square Enix and their bad business practices thanks to the revenue sharing.
