The oldest existing records of the Sotohara Nakaku Shishi Kagura date back to 1873 (Meiji 6), and its origins are said to date back to the Edo period. It is said that until around 1890 (Meiji 23), a solemn lion dance dedication ceremony was performed during festivals, but after that, entertaining themes (lion plays) were incorporated. Due to the aging of the performers and the decline in successors, lion dance performances gradually ceased to be held, and have been passed down in the current form of Kagura, which focuses on dance. The Sotohara Naka Ward Lion Kagura is characterized by its "female lion," and its elegant movements performed in a crouching, pigeon-toed stance. The drums, bamboo flute, chappa, and singing work together to enhance the Lion Kagura performance. #RegionalCulturalAssets #RegionalTraditionalPerformingArts #TraditionalPerformingArts #May #October #Aichi #KasugaiCity #Festival
