Subnautica 2 Base POWER MANAGEMENT Guide ⚡ Hidden Power Drains, Best Power Sources & Energy Tips

Power management in Subnautica 2 is more complicated than just slapping a few Solar Panels on your base and hoping everything works. In this guide, I’ll show you everything you need to know about managing base power in Subnautica 2, including hidden power drains, passive energy usage, high-drain crafting machines, Tadpole submarine recharging, Power Relays, Solar Panels, Hydroelectric Turbines, Bioreactors, and Thermal Plants. Some base components only drain a small amount of power passively, while others can drain a lot when they are actively working. One of the biggest examples is the Processor, which can use a large amount of power while converting raw resources into more useful materials like metal ingots. So if your base suddenly starts losing power during crafting, the Processor may be one of the main reasons. There are also hidden power drains that are easy to miss. For example, when you dock your Tadpole submarine to your base, the base automatically recharges the Tadpole’s battery. That can drain around 10 units of power per second until the Tadpole is fully charged. So if your power is disappearing after docking your vehicle, your base may not be broken. It may just be charging your submarine. After covering power drains, I’ll compare every major power source currently used for base building. Solar Panels are cheap, easy, and great near the surface. They work best during the day, but they still generate some power at night, around 2 units per second. They stop working once you build too deep, usually below roughly 180 to 200 meters. However, one strange trick is that Solar Panels can still work inside caves as long as the cave is close enough to the surface. The game does not currently seem to check whether the cave ceiling is blocking sunlight. Hydroelectric Turbines are another strong option. They require fixed underwater currents to function, so you can only use them in certain areas of the map. They generate around 12 power per second and are relatively cheap to build. The downside is that if you build a lot of them, they can create lag because each one has an animated spinning propeller. Bioreactors are the only internal power source you build inside your base. They work by decomposing organic material, which means they require a constant supply of fuel. Unlike solar, hydro, or thermal power, Bioreactors are not free after construction. They are bulky, loud, fairly expensive, and only produce a maximum of around 20 power per second. You can overdrive them from 10 to 20 power per second, but that also burns through fuel twice as fast. Because of that, I usually only consider Bioreactors worth using when better external power sources are too far away. Thermal Plants are the final major power source. They require a heat source like a lava vent to function and produce around 16 power per second. They cost about as much as Hydroelectric Turbines and can be very useful in hot zones. However, they are also one of the laggiest power sources, especially if you build a lot of them close to your base. A common solution for large power-hungry bases is to build Thermal Plants far enough away that the game derenders them, then daisy chain Power Relays back to your base. Right now, there does not appear to be power falloff over long relay distances, so you can run power across very long stretches of the map using relay chains.
