When it comes to Military surplus in Japan, the culture isn’t just about old uniforms but a deep history of appreciation and reinterpretation. In the postwar years, American military garments and workwear filtered into Japanese streets through surplus shops near U.S. bases, evolving from practical clothing into objects of study and devotion. Field jackets, fatigue pants, and selvedge denim became canvases for precision and craftsmanship. One such product of that exchange was the Sukajan, or souvenir jackets, first embroidered for U.S. servicemen with eagles, tigers, dragons, and base names as keepsakes of their time in Japan. At HINOYA, a cornerstone of Ame-kaji style since 1949, lines of customers, both domestic and foreign, gather every day for this exact intersection. Originally founded in 1928 in Niigata, the shop pivoted in postwar Tokyo from selling imagawayaki to dealing in imported American military surplus, inspired by neighboring surplus dealers near Asakusa. Through generations of serving between Ueno and Asakusa, they now stand at the head of multiple subgroups of the Ame-kaji community, including selvedge denim and sukajyan, carrying some of the earliest brands to offer the garments in Japan.
