What happens when you're looking for a job but just can't find one? The people Mona Vetsch meets at the Arche secondhand goods store know this. They've exhausted their benefits and are living on welfare. Luckily, at the "Arche Brocki," not only objects but also people are given a second chance. Rolf used to work as a sales manager, lived in a penthouse apartment, and earned a great salary. Today, he has over 100,000 francs in debt and sorts kitchen utensils in the Arche work and social integration project. He tells Mona Vetsch, who helps him write down the prices, about the burnout that pushed him to his limits, and not just financially. Sandra is also sometimes short on cash at the end of the month. The 38-year-old is a single parent who had an accident two years ago and lost her footing in the regular job market. "I used to think that welfare recipients were too lazy to work. Now I'm one myself," says Sandra. Re-entering the regular job market is particularly difficult for single parents, foreign nationals, or people over fifty. Mona also helps 59-year-old Gerry at the secondhand goods receiving station. Gerry has practically given up hope of one day getting off welfare. He lost his job seven years ago and has since written hundreds of applications. To no avail. Nevertheless: "Hope dies last!" he says. And at least he's now ended up in the Ark, and life for welfare recipients has a lot to offer in other ways, too. The encounters at the "Arche-Brocki" give Mona food for thought. It can happen to anyone. You lose your job, can't find a new one, and suddenly you're on the margins of society. What Mona also takes away after three days: how many prejudices still exist against welfare recipients. And that people in institutions like the Arche receive much more than just a job. Namely, appreciation, a purpose, and the feeling of belonging.
