Why Grandma Boiled Dish Rags (And Why I Tried It)

Why did our grandmothers boil dish rags? Before disposable wipes, paper towels, and endless cleaning products, many homemakers relied on simple methods to keep their homes clean and their cleaning cloths fresh. One of those methods was boiling dish rags and washcloths in water with baking soda. In this video, I test this old-fashioned cleaning method using a stack of white cotton cleaning cloths I've been using for nearly four years. These cloths replace paper towels in our home and get used for everything from cleaning up spills and wiping counters to dusting and spot cleaning. Even though they had already been washed, I was shocked by the amount of dirt and grime that came out during the boiling process. The water turned a deep brown color after the first round, convincing me to repeat the process before washing the cloths again and hanging them outside to dry in the sunshine. Did they become perfectly white again? No. Four years of use leaves some stains behind. But they came out cleaner, fresher, and completely odor-free. Follow with a normal wash cycle and line dry if possible. Sometimes the old ways are still worth knowing.
