This process continues until the surface becomes flat and smooth enough to write on with chalk. After smoothing the surface, the edges are trimmed and slightly rounded to remove sharp corners. To improve the color and writing quality, a small amount of oil or wax may be rubbed onto the surface and wiped clean.
