Odcinek 10: Winiarska Majorka - Ca Sa Padrina - winnica z rodzinnymi tradycjami
Welcome to ENORADIO. This time we’re taking you on an enotourism journey around Mallorca, off the beaten track. We visited Mallorca in winter to fully appreciate its natural riches: empty coves and spectacular hiking trails in the mountains. We admired a landscape painted with stone walls, grazing sheep and charming fishing villages that regain their peace once the season is over. Winter is also a great time to visit the local wineries. And although wine tourism on Mallorca may be less obvious than in mainland Spain, it is developing extremely dynamically. On Mallorca, vines are grown on more than 2,000 hectares. The area is mainly covered by the Binissalem and Pla i Llevant appellations, with numerous wineries scattered between the mountains and the sea. Compared to mainland Spain, this is a small scale, but enough to produce more than 500 wine brands, largely from local varieties. Our route leads through the surroundings of Binissalem and the historic town that greets travellers with monuments to winemakers, reminding everyone that wine here is the foundation of culture. This is where the giants of the local market operate, such as Bodega Jose L. Ferrer, the oldest family winery on Mallorca, founded in 1931 in Binissalem by José Luis Ferrer Ramonell, who, after studying in France, introduced modern techniques such as ageing in oak barrels and bottling quality wines from the local Manto Negro variety. The fourth generation of the family continues the tradition on 130 organic hectares in the Binissalem DO, combining historic cellars with innovative Veritas and Pedra de Binissalem lines and offering winery tours and tastings that promote local wines. We, however, turn towards the smaller, family‑run and artisanal projects. During our stay on Mallorca we visited three remarkable places: a traditional winery – Ca Sa Padrina, where the younger generation of winemakers has bravely steered the family story onto a new course; the Selva Vins project, which focuses on natural wines from native varieties; and the Los Dos Caballeros winery combined with agritourism, created by foreigners who found their place in the world on Mallorca. We invite you to meet winemakers who show different faces of Mallorca’s wine scene. In this episode we will introduce you to a winery where wine‑making traditions have been nurtured for three generations. To begin, we turn off the main road towards Sencelles to feel the rhythm of Mallorca you won’t find in guidebooks. Ca Sa Padrina, loosely translated, simply means “Grandma’s House”. The name is no coincidence – this is where the current owners’ grandfather used to make his homemade wine. The story of this place picked up speed in 1999, when Andreu Suñer, a biology teacher by profession, decided to revive the family tradition. Today the reins have been taken over by his sons, Andreu and Guillem. There is no pretension here. What you do find is solid knowledge brought from school and respect for the land. Here we saw almost 50‑year‑old Manto Negro and Callet vines, which are used to make their flagship wine, “Can Tano”. In the next episode we will visit Selva Vins, the unique project of Carlos Rodríguez, who has fully committed himself to natural wines, limiting himself to local Mallorcan varieties. So stay with us and subscribe to Enoradio so you don’t miss the next episode. Your comments and ratings are the fuel for our further journeys, so let us know under the video how you liked wine‑growing Mallorca.
