Game Film Review: S26. Ep. 02 | Working Area, Shading, and Batter Interference

In this video, we’re breaking down real game film from a college baseball game and using it as a teaching tool for umpires working a crew of two. We walk through a series of clipped plays and talk through what the crew does, what they do well, and where there are opportunities to be cleaner, more efficient, and more consistent. The goal here is not criticism for the sake of criticism. The goal is actionable learning that umpires can take directly back to their own high school and amateur games. We cover topics like: • Point of the plate positioning • Reading fielders instead of the ball • Fair/foul and catch/no-catch responsibilities • Fly ball coverage in a two-umpire system • Double play mechanics • Plate umpire movement on balls in play • Batter’s interference mechanics and enforcement Even though this is college-level footage, the mechanics and concepts translate directly to high school baseball. Watching how another crew handles these situations allows you to mentally run reps, visualize your own movement, and think through how you would react in the same moments. That’s one of the biggest advantages of film study. It slows the game down and lets us learn without the pressure of being on the field. As always, keep the discussion in the comments constructive and professional. If you comment, focus on what we can do better as umpires and what lessons you’re taking into your next game. If there’s something you’d like to see reviewed in a future video, let me know. Thanks for watching.
