Ohio Police Confront Illegal Migrant Group of 'Gypsies' In Violin Scam At Aldi - w/ fake documents

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio – A family of three Illegal migrants from Romania, including two wanted men, were banned from Aldi’s (Bagley Road), for playing loud instrumental music & asking people for money outside the store. An anonymous caller told police at about 1:30 p.m. Aug. 22 that one man in the group was playing a violin loudly in front of the store. When police arrived, they saw a man, later identified as a 46-year-old Westlake resident, playing violin through a loudspeaker. A sign was positioned nearby which requested money for a family tragedy, a bucket of money was near the sign. Another in the group was sitting in the driver’s seat of a Toyota Sienna. He was later identified as a 20-year-old Westlake man with the same last name as the violin player. The officer was quick to realize that this was a common scam, and that many times the loudspeaker is playing a pre-recorded musical track as someone mimics playing the instrument. This, along with a sob story sign, are a tactic used to garner sympathy from trusting individuals, and preys on human kindness through emotional manipulation. Police agencies all around the US have already spoken up about this scam to warn unsuspecting people, it is an organized operation projected to involve hundreds. This specific scam is happening all over Northeast Ohio, including almost all surrounding suburbs of Cleveland. Officers investigated further and learned that no one in the group had a valid driver's license, and that some of the documents provided were fake. It was also discovered that the family, apparent Gypsies from Romania, had entered into the US illegally from the southern border in Texas, and were also wanted by Westlake police for the same type of behavior. The Westlake police department did not want the suspects on their warrants, so they were forced to advise and release. I could not locate any records of citations written by Middleburg Heights police for this case, so the assumption is that they were not charged with any crimes or even ticketed, this appears to have ended in a verbal warning...I am working on obtaining footage from Westlake PD on 2 separate incidents involving these 2 males, from the police report I have already reviewed as well court records I've obtained, they have progressed in paying the fines in Westlake. The female, Elise has paid off her solicitation charge in full. Luis (driver) owes $236.25 in fines, with $355.00 outstanding. Florian (the older male "playing" the violin) has not paid any of his fines. Another important note from the Westlake report is that Florian had an "EWW" out of Colorado for forgery.
