What is Breath Support / Appoggio ?

Breath support and appoggio can be confusing for singers to really know if they are doing correctly. Often, singers correlate more sensation in the body as being better- but sometimes this can lead to over-pressurizing the vocal cords from below. Learning to kinesthetically map the correct support sensations in the body goes hand in hand with optimizing phonation. When you change registration or phonation, you change the pressure system in the lungs. This subglottic pressure is also what dictates the kind of phonation/registration. So it is a positive feedback loop that must be balanced both at the support level AND at the phonatory level.
