As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, historians say the milestone offers an opportunity not only to commemorate the nation's founding but also to better understand the people and events that shaped it. While many Americans associate Independence Day with the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, the story behind the nation's birth is more complex than many realize.
