46 – Subjuntivo em francês

In this French lesson, we'll understand when and how to use the subjunctive, one of the most important aspects of advanced French. It's mainly used to express doubt, emotion, necessity, judgment, or uncertainty. 1. When to use the subjunctive The subjunctive usually appears after "que" (that/which), when the sentence expresses: Necessity or obligation Il faut que… – It is necessary that… Example: Il faut que tu viennes. (It is necessary that you come.) Il est important que… Example: Il est important que nous soyons à l’heure. (It is important that we are punctual.) Emotion or feeling Je suis content(e) que… Example: Je suis contente que tu sois ici. (I am happy that you are here.) Ça me fait plaisir que… Example: Ça me fait plaisir que vous participiez. (It is pleasant that you participate.) (I'm glad you're participating.) Doubt or uncertainty Je doute que… Example: Je doute qu’il puisse le faire. (I doubt he can do it.) Il se peut que… Example: Il se peut qu’elle ait oublié. (She may have forgotten.) Subjective judgment or opinion Je ne pense pas que… Example: Je ne pense pas qu’il ait raison. (I don't think he's right.) Bien que… (although) Example: Bien qu’il soit fatigué, il continue. (Even though he is tired, he continues.) (Although he is tired, he continues.) 2. How to form the subjunctive (basic form) For regular verbs: Parler → que je parle Finir → que je finisse Vendre → that sells Irregular important verbs: Être → que je souis Avoir → que j’aie Aller → que j’aille Faire → que je faze Pouvoir → que je puisse Savoir → que je sache 3. Indicative or Subjunctive? Je Pense qu’il est prêt. (Indicative – certainty) Je ne Pense pas qu’il soit prêt. (Subjunctive – doubt) Il est sûr qu’il vient. (certainty) It's not certain that it will come. (uncertainty) The subjunctive seems complicated, but it's more a matter of pattern than logic. The more you listen, the more natural it becomes.
