TRIBUNSELAYAR.COM, BONTOSIKUYU - The search for victims of the sunken Motor Sailing Ship (KLM) Nurul Salsa has not yielded results as of Friday (July 17, 2026). 27 passengers are still missing in the tragedy of the KLM Nurul Salsa sinking on Wednesday (July 15, 2026). On the third day of the SAR operation, the joint search and rescue team conducted the search by dividing the operational area into two sectors. The search was supported by KN SAR Kamajaya 104 in sector II, a Boeing B737-200 air force from Sultan Hasanuddin Air Force Base, and KRI Marlin 877 conducting a search in sector I. During the operation, the joint SAR team found a life buoy suspected to be from the KM Nurul Salsa. However, until the search operation was temporarily suspended in the afternoon, no signs of other victims were found. "On the third day of the search, a team from the KN Sar Kamajaya found a lifebuoy, but it was unable to be reached due to high waves," said Muhammad Arif Anwar, Head of the Makassar Class A Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas). However, he said that all information obtained in the field would be used for evaluation to determine the next search strategy. He also stated that the KRI Marlin 877 had completed its mission in the KM Nurul Salsa search and rescue operation and had now returned to Makassar waters. The search operation will continue with the joint SAR team remaining on site, as per the operational plan. "We express our appreciation to all elements of the joint SAR team, including the KRI Marlin 877 and all its personnel, who have assisted in the search operation since the first day. Inter-agency synergy is a key strength in this humanitarian operation. We will continue our search efforts for the 25 victims who are still unaccounted for," Arif said. The Makassar National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) urges the public with information regarding the whereabouts of victims or objects suspected of being related to the KM Nurul Salsa to immediately report it to the nearest SAR Post. All developments in the operation will be reported periodically based on the results of the search in the field. (*) KLM Nurul Salsa Also Carried Copra and Rice The motorized sailing vessel (KLM) Nurul Salsa was not only carrying 74 passengers. The ship was also carrying merchandise and other essential goods. The Selayar Islands Police reported that it contained 10 tons of rice, 2 tons of copra, 5 tons of charcoal, four cattle, and six motorcycles. "The cargo included rice, copra, charcoal, cattle, and motorcycles, in addition to people," said the Head of the Public Relations Sub-Division of the Selayar Police, Aipda Suardi Andre Alimuddin, Thursday (July 17, 2026). Meanwhile, another victim's family, Yusna, reported that the ship struggled to float due to high waves and strong winds while the engine was off. The Alkon pump engine was unable to keep up with the heavy seawater entering the ship. The copra cargo became heavier as it mixed with water. The KLM Nurul Salsa then sank after several hours of engine failure. (*) Reporter: Samsul Bahri Narrator: Nisrina Muhaemin (UNM Intern) Video Editor: Sanovra J.
