We Finally Solved Our Biggest Compost Problem! / Building Laurel Ridge Farms

Building Laurel Ridge Farms means turning five acres of North Florida sand into productive farmland—while working full time, clearing more land, and building everything on a limited budget. In this episode, we look back at how much our property has already changed and explain the three major limitations affecting our progress: time, money, and soil fertility. Our freshly tilled ground may look promising, but underneath it is extremely sandy soil with very little organic matter. Producing enough homemade compost is essential if we want to grow healthy vegetables and build a productive small farm. Grass clippings provide valuable nitrogen-rich green material for our compost, but collecting them and maintaining the property takes time. We introduce our new zero-turn mower, which will help us manage the farm much more efficiently and give us more time for growing, building, and expanding Laurel Ridge Farms. Then we reveal the missing piece of our compost system: a tractor-powered PTO wood chipper. The branches and brush we remove while clearing the property can now become carbon-rich wood chips instead of waste. Those wood chips can be combined with grass clippings to make compost, used as mulch, added to pathways, and eventually help us transform our Florida sand into healthier soil. Every improvement has a larger purpose: clearing more growing space, producing more compost, improving our soil, expanding the farm stand, and moving one step closer to our dream of a permanent Laurel Ridge Farms store.
