Hot Wheels Corvette Stingray build-off (057 / 058)

On the bench today is a Hot Wheels 1975 Corvette Stingray. It’s a diecast that I love, and it’s my second restoration of one. Production began in 1976 and they’re still cranking them out today, which is a testament to their enduring popularity. Mine is from the 2009 Sharkbite Racers 5 pack, in metallic flake silver with ghost flames and a transluscent blue windshield. I’m participating in my very first build off with 4 other modellers who I really don’t belong in the same room with. But as Ringo Starr once said about belonging to the Beatles, “I’m just happy to be here.” This Larry Wood designed car is the one that’s been chosen. I’ll do my best to up my game a bit today. Stay with me for some subtle changes and I might just break out the jeweler’s saw and turn my hobby bench into a chop shop. I don’t think there are winners and losers in these build offs, are there? I hope not! It’ll be fun and that’s the main thing! Be sure to stay right to the end for a surprise finish. The Corvette, known colloquially as the ’Vette, is an iconic sports car that’s been manufactured by Chevrolet through seven generations. The first model, a convertible, was introduced at the GM Motorama in 1953 as a concept show car. Myron Scott is credited for naming the car after the type of small, maneuverable warship called a corvette. Originally built in Flint, Michigan and St. Louis, Missouri, the Corvette is currently manufactured in Bowling Green, Kentucky and is the official sports car of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The third generation Corvette Stingray, patterned after the 1965 Mako Shark II concept car designed by Larry Shinoda, was introduced for the 1968 model year and was in production until 1982. C3 (after Corvette 3rd generation) coupes featured the first use of T-top removable roof panels. The C3 marks the second time the Corvette would carry the Stingray name, though only for the 1969 - 1976 model years. This time it was a single word as opposed to Sting Ray as used for the 1963 - 1967 C2 generation. The name would then be retired until 2014 when it was re-introduced with the release of the C7. The 1975 model was advertised as "a more efficient Corvette,” as service intervals were extended and electronic ignition and the federally mandated catalytic converter were introduced with "unleaded fuel only" warnings on the fuel gauge and filler door. Dual exhaust pipes were routed to a single converter, then split again leading to dual mufflers and tailpipes. Enjoy this Corvette Stingray makeover.
