The Permian-Triassic extinction event, which occurred approximately 251 million years ago, wiped out approximately 80% to 90% of the world's biodiversity. However, some species somehow survived this extinction, and over time, these species rose to dominate the Earth. They then evolved into giant land creatures, apex predators, flying life forms the size of fighter jets, and legendary sea creatures. Some of these creatures evolved in such bizarre ways that they seemed to have stepped out of a fantasy book. In fact, some seemed to exist solely to confuse us. For example, some had very strange skulls, while others had strange back protrusions that were at least as long as they were. Some had necks 3 to 4 meters long, and still others had sharp claws on their tails. Others coexisted with these strange and predatory creatures, yet diversified in their shadow. These creatures, which would play key roles in the future of our planet, were none other than animals and plants. This week, we examine the creatures that survived the Permian-Triassic extinction event, witnessing how these creatures diversified, took over the world, and were threatened with extinction by yet another extinction event.
