BMW S62 Engine Rebuild Masterclass: High‑Output NA Longblock, Alusil & JE Pistons

Go deep on the BMW S62 with Peter Partee and Chris Knerr: what a real “engine rebuild” means at Partee Racing, why we refuse to reuse consumables, and how our High‑Output Naturally Aspirated S62 Longblock is engineered and machined for durability and repeatable performance. We also explain Alusil the right way, balancing to within 1 gram, and small parts that make a big difference. IN THIS VIDEO • Rebuilds, defined: why bargain “rebuilds” cut corners (reused gaskets/bolts, untouched heads) and what our baseline includes instead. • Consumables you never reuse: multi‑layer steel head gaskets, torque‑to‑yield (TTY) fasteners (head/main/rod bolts), seals and bearings—all new, every time. • Hidden‑but‑critical parts we replace: VANOS pressure‑relief valves in the hollow cams; the block’s VANOS oil non‑return check ball and upper stopper; dozens of oil‑gallery plugs removed, ultrasonically cleaned, and replaced. • Head work that’s standard here: decking for flatness, 4‑angle valve job, new valve springs (S65/S85 springs are a known weakness), and optional CNC clearancing if you plan to run larger cams later. • Bottom‑end choices & why they matter: lighter, stronger rotating assemblies reduce heat and friction and are kinder to rod/main bearings. For S62 HO‑NA we use custom JE 2618 forged pistons with offset wrist pins and asymmetric skirts (larger thrust‑side skirt), DLC‑coated tool‑steel pins, contact‑reduction grooves, and lateral gas ports for ring seal. (For S65/S85 builds, we compare Carrillo rods and MAHLE PowerPak piston options in the video.) • Precision balance & weight‑match: components are matched and digitally balanced to within 1 gram—far tighter than common industry targets—to deliver smoother revs and long life. • Alusil done right (no sleeves required): it’s not a “coating”; it’s the block alloy. We re‑expose the silicon and verify surface finish cylinder‑by‑cylinder with a profilometer. This is slower—but it’s the repeatable, reliable way. • Why we cost more—and why it pencils out: the value is certainty (performance + durability). If budget is tight for a failed engine, a known‑good salvage long block is often a better gamble than a corner‑cut “rebuild.” WHAT MAKES OUR S62 HIGH‑OUTPUT NA LONGBLOCK SPECIAL • Custom JE 2618 pistons with offset pins & asymmetric skirts (lightweight, strong, excellent ring seal features). • Fully refreshed heads: decking, 4‑angle valve job, new valve springs; optional CNC porting & cam clearancing based on build goals. • Complete new consumables: gaskets/seals, bearings, TTY fasteners. • Meticulous cleaning: galleries and plugs removed, cleaned, and replaced to keep debris out of bearings. • Blueprinting & balancing: weight‑matched rotating assembly and digital crank balance to ~1 gram. • Alusil reconditioning to spec (profilometer‑verified). • Test, verify, document: we build to repeatable specs and keep records for every engine. REAL‑WORLD PROOF POINTS (discussed in video) • Customers choose these engines for both NA builds and heavy‑duty use. One well‑known S62 track car ran forced induction at ~14 psi and reportedly delivered ~830 whp on our properly prepared S62 foundation. Results vary with tuning and hardware, but the takeaway is robustness when the machining and parts are right. TIERS & OPTIONS (AT A GLANCE) • Tier 1 (baseline street performance): forged pistons, refreshed heads, all new consumables, blueprinting/balance, Alusil reconditioning. • Tier 2 (street‑plus): add CNC porting, high‑lift cams (Dbilas/Schrick), and compression tweaks for meaningful NA power gains. • Tier 3 (competition): race‑weight components, aggressive cams/heads, dry‑sump options—track‑focused packages by consultation. LOGISTICS & SUPPORT • We can build long blocks or receive your full car for complete R&R, road test, and validation. • Nationwide and international shipping arranged via our broker; insured, professionally crated. • Near Virginia International Raceway (VIR)—clients can validate builds on member days (driver experience required). About Partee Racing Engine builds, CNC‑machined components, brake systems, chassis reinforcement, carbon, and validation on our dyno and flow bench.
