Alone and Soaked | Never been so glad to arrive at this Scottish bothy.

In this Scottish bothy adventure, I set off alone on my mountain bike through relentless rain, floods, bogs and swollen rivers to reach Carron Bothy in Argyll. The 6-mile ride starts easily enough, but the final mile becomes a true battle—deep bogs, rutted tracks, fallen trees, cold winds and constant rain turning the trail into a soaking, energy-sapping slog. By the time I finally reach the bothy, I am freezing, soaked and exhausted… and I’ve never been so glad to see a dry shelter. Inside Carron Bothy, I get an open fire going, dry out my dripping kit, and warm up with a hot meal cooked on my gas stove. A cold beer and a well-earned whisky make the perfect end to a brutal day in the Scottish wilds. The peace, the firelight, and the sound of rain hammering the roof remind me why these Argyll bothy trips are so special, even when the weather is at its worst.
