Starting with this episode, Professor Yoshihiro Watanabe of Waseda University will explain the world of Eastern thought over three episodes, focusing on the theme of "Chinese Classics Confronting Desire and Self." The theme of the first episode is, "Does desire give life or destroy people?" Is human "desire" evil? Or is it an energy that moves people and changes society? From the Warring States period to the time of Qin Shi Huang, Legalists viewed humans as "beings that seek self-interest" and incorporated that desire into the state's system. This included the military merit system where rank increased with military achievement, legal rewards and punishments, and the techniques by which rulers manipulated their subjects. There, one finds an ideology that transforms human selfishness into the power of the state. On the other hand, Confucianism does not deny desire, but seeks to bring order through propriety, order, and honor. If desire is left unchecked, both individuals and society will be destroyed. However, if desire is directed correctly, people can move towards self-realization and recognition. Furthermore, the assassins depicted in the Records of the Grand Historian embody desires that cannot be contained within institutions or order. Why have the men who risked their lives to assassinate the First Emperor been recounted for 2000 years, even after their downfall? Using Legalism, Confucianism, and the Records of the Grand Historian as clues, we will decipher the ideologies that institutionalize desire, the ideologies that order it, and even the redemption through narrative. Does desire give life or destroy it? ▼Performer Profile Yoshihiro Watanabe Born in Tokyo in 1962 (Showa 37). Completed doctoral course in History and Anthropology at the University of Tsukuba Graduate School. Doctor of Literature. After serving as a professor in the Faculty of Letters at Daito Bunka University, he is currently a permanent director and professor at the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences, Waseda University. He is also the chairman of the board of directors of the Okuma Memorial Waseda Saga Gakuen. His specialty is "Classical China." He is the secretary-general of the Society for the Study of the Three Kingdoms. His publications include "The Rule of the Later Han State and Confucianism," "Confucianism and China: The Origins of 'Two Thousand Years of Orthodox Thought'," "Romance of the Three Kingdoms: From the Romance to the Official History and Historical Facts," and "Complete Translation of the Book of Later Han" (19 volumes, chief editor). He has also written books related to the manga "Kingdom," supervised the new edition of Eiji Yoshikawa's "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," and supervised the Japanese version of the film "Red Cliff." His favorite character is Zhuge Liang.
