Tutu, the former Anglican archbishop of Cape Town, was awarded the Templeton Prize for his life-long work in advancing spiritual principles such as love and forgiveness which has helped to liberate people around the world. St. George's Cathedral became known as "the people's cathedral" for its role in the fight against apartheid when Tutu served there as archbishop from 1986 to 1996.
