The Collopy gang emerged in Limerick City during the late 1990s, originating from a strategic partnership with the established Keane crime family. Based in the St. Mary's Park estate, the Collopys entered the illicit drug trade at a time when violent feuding had begun escalating throughout Limerick's underworld. According to local accounts, the Collopy crew initially clashed with Christy and Kieran Keane, brothers who commanded a lucrative drug operation, by intercepting and selling off a consignment of the Keanes' drugs. Rather than responding with violence, Christy Keane recognized the Collopys' effectiveness at moving product and recruited them as partners instead. This alliance formed the Keane-Collopy gang, which became one of two dominant family-based criminal organizations in Limerick, the other being the McCarthy-Dundon faction.
