And here's another thought from Isaac: "Demons greatly fear uniformity." It's not just fasting and prayer—they fear a man who is difficult to knock down. Today he doesn't burn, tomorrow he won't fall. Today he doesn't take on the unbearable, tomorrow he won't lie under the rubble of his own determination. Isaac warns: fervor can become a trap. You can intensify a feat so much that later you won't even have the strength for prayer. Therefore, don't abandon the small things, don't pretend to be a great ascetic, don't break yourself. If you lack the strength, don't pretend, but don't abandon faithfulness either. Isaac says to God: "You brought me into being, though I didn't ask for it..." And even more strongly: God knew that life would be chaotic and weak, but He gave it to me anyway. This is where hope is born. If God knew my weakness, then I have no right to despair.
