#33 Visual Journalism・Irene de la Torre Arenas, Jonas Oesch, Marco Hernandez・On Data And Design
For decades, the photograph was the door opener of journalism — the image that stopped you mid-scroll, that made you read the article. Today, that role increasingly belongs to the visualization. A well-crafted chart, map, or graphic doesn't just catch the eye — it orients the reader, puts numbers into perspective, and reveals what words alone cannot convey. Studies show that articles with data visualizations are read to completion far more often, and that visuals are shared even when the article itself is not. Visual journalism is not new. But the tools, the formats, and the expectations have changed dramatically. Newsrooms that once had a single graphics desk now build entire teams around visual storytelling — combining data analysis, design, code, and editorial judgment into a new kind of practice. For our next On Data And Design session, we bring together three practitioners from three of the world's leading editorial environments to explore what this craft looks like from the inside — the process, the decisions, the constraints, and the possibilities. Here are the speakers Irene de la Torre Arenas Financial Times Irene is part of the Visual Storytelling team at the Financial Times, where she creates data-driven narratives that blend animation, interactive graphics, and investigative reporting. Previously at BBC News, she brings deep experience in how leading newsrooms approach visual communication. Jonas Oesch NZZ Jonas is a Visual Journalist at NZZ Visuals, where he produces data-driven visual stories on technology, economics, and science. With a background in media informatics and applied research in data visualization, he combines analytical thinking with visual craft — and writes openly about his process and insights from daily practice. Marco Hernandez The New York Times Marco is a Visual Journalist at The New York Times, where his work has been part of two Pulitzer Prize-winning projects. He specializes in visual storytelling that combines data, design, and reporting to make complex stories understandable and impactful.
