Make Blue POP in Portraits: Light & Color Tips | Take & Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Bold, eye-catching portraits often come down to wise color choices. In this session, photographer Gavin Hoey takes a “less is more” approach by focusing on a single intense color, blue! The look begins with a simple, DIY backdrop made from blue paper rolled into tubes. Gavin then explains how careful light control is essential for maximizing the potential of a color palette. He demonstrates how getting it wrong can push the blues into shadow, and how using a large light source allows him to avoid harsh contrast, achieve even color, and maintain the feeling of depth in the portraits. Once the one flash lighting is dialled in, Gavin demonstrates how a color checker can be used in post-processing to take blues from “nice” to an eye-popping “wow” in just a few clicks. Blue-toned props and a matching outfit for model Chloe complete the blue “monochrome” style, resulting in a cohesive and vibrant final image.
