The Church of Saint Joseph, whose correct name is Church of the Glorious Patriarch Saint Joseph, had its first construction in 1608. In 1649 it was the Parish Church and Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro for some time. In 1808, the Brotherhood of this Church decided to build another church, as the old chapel was in a very deteriorated state.
