To celebrate this, we publish his rare performance from 1999 at the festival. Branford Marsalis (born August 26, 1960 in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana) is an American jazz and classical saxophonist. Marsalis began his professional career in the early 1980s, playing in Art Blakey's big band, Clark Terry's, and Blakey's Jazz Messengers. From 1982 to 1985, he played in his younger brother Wynton's band, and then in Sting's backing band. He can be heard on Sting's 1988 album Englishman in New York. In 1986, he founded his own band. From 1992 to 1995, he was musical director of the Tonight Show Band. He then started the Buckshot LeFonque project, which aimed to combine jazz with rhythm and blues, hip hop and rock 'n' roll. In the early 90s he made guest appearances with the Grateful Dead. He also toured with Miles Davis in one of his last bands. He founded the record company Marsalis Music and is the founder of the Branford Marsalis Quartet. Branford Marsalis is the oldest of six brothers, four of whom, like his father Ellis Marsalis, are jazz musicians. On March 19, 2008, Marsalis gave a masterclass at the Hague Conservatory and on November 19, 2014 he gave a masterclass at the Codarts Rotterdam art college.
