Henry James’ 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw is one of the great literary ghost stories, and it has been brought to screen multiple times, including the classic 1961 horror film The Innocents. The 2020 film The Turning is a new adaptation of the book, and while it tries to lean into the book’s ambiguity about whether the ghosts are real, it simply ends up leaving audiences confused by its very abrupt ending.
