We Have the Checklist. We Do Not Have the Communication [E105]

I open with a simple observation from a recent workshop, timing how long a vehicle actually sits between drop off and the moment a wrench turns. What I found is that busy people at every step can still add up to a slow, isolated process for the client, and that isolation costs us more than time. It costs us accountability. From there I get into what I've learned to call silent disengagement, the narrow, task-locked focus that looks exactly like good work from the outside, but quietly misses things that fall outside a specialist's lane. I share two examples that show what that costs, one from a recent onsite consultation involving a tire job and a missed tie rod, and one from my own history as a transmission specialist. I lean on Atul Gawande's research from The Checklist Manifesto throughout, including the surgical checklist trial at the University of Toronto and his four expectations of true professionalism, closing with why AI voice dictation is about to reward the exact verbal habit our industry has let go quiet. Word of the Day: Articulate. This word does double duty. As an adjective, it means expressing yourself clearly and effectively. As a verb, it carries two jobs: to put an idea into words, and, in anatomy and mechanics, to form a joint that lets two parts move together.
