#63 Postcards to Dad | Casillas De Morales |The Trail That Wasn't

Sometimes the best walks are the ones you don't finish... This week on Postcards to Dad, we set out to explore Casillas de Morales on a circular walking route through the heart of Fuerteventura. When our original plans fell through, we quickly pieced together a circular walk that looked perfect on paper, hoping for an easy day's hiking after our recent adventure across the rugged Cuchillas. The walk began beautifully. Quiet tracks, volcanic scenery, abandoned buildings, colourful desert flora and wide-open views made it seem we'd stumbled across another hidden gem. What looked straightforward on the map quickly became a very different proposition on the ground. Our planned route suddenly left the comfort of the established trail and pointed straight across a vast expanse of jagged volcanic badlands. There was no visible path—just endless ankle-breaking lava fields stretching into the distance. What had promised to be a relaxing circular walk would have become a slow, painful scramble with very little reward for the effort. Sometimes, turning back is the smartest adventure.
