Chiang Rai (เชียงราย), Thailand’s northernmost city, sits close to the borders of Laos (ลาว) and Myanmar (พม่า), making it a crossroads of cultures, trade, and traditions. Founded in 1262 by King Mangrai (พญามังราย) as the first capital of the Lanna Kingdom (อาณาจักรล้านนา), it remains a place where history, art, and frontier landscapes come together. The city itself feels relaxed, but its temples are strikingly bold. The most famous is the gleaming Wat Rong Khun (วัดร่องขุ่น), or White Temple, designed by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat (เฉลิมชัย โฆษิตพิพัฒน์). Covered in mirrored mosaics and surreal details, it blends Buddhist imagery with unexpected modern motifs. Not far away, the Blue Temple, Wat Rong Suea Ten (วัดร่องเสือเต้น), glows in sapphire tones with intricate naga carvings. Meanwhile, the Black House, Baan Dam (บ้านดำ), created by artist Thawan Duchanee (ถวัลย์ ดัชนี), is a thought-provoking collection of dark wood halls filled with art exploring themes of life and death. Beyond the city, the Golden Triangle (สามเหลี่ยมทองคำ) — where the Mekong River (แม่น้ำโขง) meets the Ruak River (แม่น้ำรวก) — was once notorious for opium trade but is now a scenic viewpoint and cultural museum. For a gentler pace, the tea-covered hills of Doi Mae Salong (ดอยแม่สลอง) invite visitors to taste oolong tea and learn about the Chinese Yunnanese communities who settled here after the civil war in China. Compared to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai is quieter, less touristy, and more experimental in its art and architecture.
