Jônatas Machado Gomes, known as Jônatas Petróleo, is an artist who built his career from the most authentic roots of São Paulo samba. Born in 1984, he began his musical journey at a young age, 14, in the Jardim Santa Tereza neighborhood, where he had his first contact with samba and pagode as part of the group Sequência. His musical training gained consistency in the early 2000s, when he was accepted into the traditional music school now known as EMESP Tom Jobim. For more than four years, he dedicated himself to studying the cavaquinho, expanding his technical mastery and artistic vision. During this period, he also joined the University of São Paulo Choir, an experience that significantly contributed to his vocal development. His connection with traditional samba was strengthened within the Samba da Vela community, an important cultural movement in the city of São Paulo. In this space, Jônatas presented his compositions, gained prominence, and began collaborating with major names in the genre, participating in recordings and projects alongside renowned artists. His artistic versatility also led him to the stage, sharing performances with relevant groups and participating in important cultural projects. Simultaneously, he developed a strong presence in musical education, working as a guitar and cavaquinho teacher for years, directly impacting new generations of musicians. As a project creator, he developed initiatives such as Educasamba and Projeto Um Canto, aimed at rescuing and valuing Brazilian popular music. At the Zumaluma Association, he consolidated a career spanning more than a decade as an educator, coordinator, and cultural producer, being responsible for actions such as the Sarau Samba Original, which became a reference in the local scene. In 2010, he joined the group Dose Certa, one of the leading names in samba in São Paulo. Within the group, he acted as a singer, composer, and arranger, participating in the recording of CDs, DVDs, television programs, and major performances, in addition to sharing experiences with renowned Brazilian music artists. Simultaneously, he developed original projects such as A Tríade CPF, with a critical and reflective artistic approach, culminating in the release of the album Revendo Conceitos. His solo career gained momentum from 2021 onwards, with the release of the EP Alô Barra Funda, which presented the public with an authentic and contemporary work. With remarkable audiovisual productions and relevant collaborations, Jônatas has expanded his presence in the music scene with songs that reflect his identity and experience in samba. His work combines tradition and innovation, engaging with different generations and cultural contexts. Beyond music, his trajectory also involves social and academic activism. A graduate in music and currently a student of Geography at the University of São Paulo, Jônatas reaffirms his commitment to education and social transformation.
