However, in July 2017, heavy rains in northern Kyushu caused extensive damage to the section of the line between Soeda Station and Yoake Station. Due to the high cost of restoration, plans to restore the line as a railway were abandoned, and in August 2023 (Reiwa 5), it reopened between Soeda Station and Hita Station as a BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system, running on a section of the roadbed exclusively for buses. This is the Hita-Hikosan Line BRT (Hikoboshi Line). In this series, we will visit all of the stations (bus stops) on this reopened bus line and report on the surrounding area. This time, we will first board the BRT bus from Hita Station to show you the view from the window of the route (Hita to Yoake). We will then leave the section that runs parallel to the JR Kyudai Main Line and introduce three stations: Yoake, Iwaihara, and Kozuru. Unlike the high school route introduced last time, this route runs through what could be called the modern-day center of Hita. There are many commercial facilities lined up along the national highway, and it is easy to get around by car. There were many busy streets. However, to avoid competition with other bus companies and community bus routes, there are no BRT bus stops. After passing through Mitsuoka, Minamitomoda, and Kitatomoda stations, which we introduced last time, the bus headed along National Route 386, which runs along the valley created by the Mikuma River. It seems that the JR single-track railway and the two-lane national highway have been laid out in a narrow space carved out by cutting into the cliff, and the medium-sized bus we were riding in felt cramped as it navigated the road, which occasionally had sharp curves. It takes just two stations and 10 minutes on the Kyudai Line train from Hita Station to Yoake Station. On the other hand, it takes about 22 minutes by bus, which takes quite a long time. Yoake Station is unique in that it is located on top of a cliff, and buses arrive and depart from a very narrow rotary at the bottom of the cliff. The bus stop is located on a traffic island sandwiched between the national highway and the roadway of the rotary, so buses bound for Soeda cross the opposite lane of the national highway to stop at the bus stop. Yoake Station currently has platforms 1 and 2, but there used to be platform 3 on the north side for the Hitahikosan Line. The Hitahikosan Line (Yoake to Soeda) has now been completely abolished as a railway, so the tracks have been removed. It's a long walk from here. We headed north on National Route 211, which branches off from National Route 386. It took 10 minutes from Yoake Station to reach the next station, Iwaihara Station, and another 7 minutes to reach Kamimura Station. Along the national highway, you'll come across clusters of houses, and bus stops seem to be located in the center of these settlements. A distinctive feature of these bus stops is that they only have a signpost (pole) on one side of the platform. This likely cuts down on installation costs. 0:00 Route Description 0:43 Views from the Bus Interior/Window (Hita to Yoake) 4:07 Yoake Station 9:03 "Yufuin no Mori" Has Arrived! 11:11 Yoake → Iwaihara (passing an electric bus) 13:14 Iwaihara Station 14:29 Kamimura Station This video uses the following background music downloaded from the free video site "DOVA Syndrome."
