In the mid-1980s, Slobodan Milošević entered the political arena in Serbia and became head of government of the Belgrade-dominated federation. He skillfully harnessed the power of burgeoning Serbian nationalism. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, the region disintegrated, and the desire for independence from the government grew ever stronger. This movement ultimately led to the Yugoslav Wars, with more than 100,000 casualties and 4 million displaced persons.
