Clives Ovation acoustic set up

This video shows a 'lite' set up on Clive's very pretty Ovation acoustic. This guitar is at 'that age' where, over the years, the top has bellied slightly and the neck sunk a little lifting the bridge and raising the playing action. As far as I know there are 3 main options when a guitar reaches this point in its life: 1) you continue to reduce the bridge saddle to lower the action to a bearable level 2) you try to reduce the degree of bellying (by using a tool such as the 'Bridge Doctor' or by heating and clamping the top) or 3) you accept the guitar needs a neck reset. The 1-piece sealed saddle-and-pickup unit on this guitar made reducing the saddle practically impossible. The only short-term solution was to remove the last factory-installed plastic shim to give a small improvement in the last-fret action and to set the 1st fret action nice and low. There was room for improvement there - and very often it's the reduction of the 1st fret action that contributes most to the guitar feeling easier and lighter to play.
