The Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary of Black Men is a Catholic religious brotherhood, created to shelter the religiosity of the Black people, who during the time of slavery were prevented from attending the same churches as their masters. It maintains a centuries-old devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary in its calendar. Black people who came from Africa, even with their own beliefs, became devout when they arrived in Brazil, because they saw a different scenario and, in the face of this scenario, built their own brotherhoods. Origins of the Devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary The devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary originated among the Dominicans around 1200. Saint Dominic of Guzman, inspired by the Virgin Mary, gave the Rosary its current form. This can be verified in episodes revealed in its iconography. The first Rosary confraternity was instituted by the Dominicans in Cologne (Germany) in 1408. Soon the devotion spread, also being taken by Portuguese missionaries to the Kingdom of Congo.
