Bruckner – Symphonie Nr. 9 | Simon Rattle | BRSO

On the 200th anniversary of Anton Bruckner’s birth, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle performed Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor. The concert was recorded live at the Isarphilharmonie (Gasteig HP8, Munich) on 5 November 2024. At the end of his life, Bruckner is said to have dedicated this three-movement fragment—poised between despair and hope - “to the dear God.” The opening movement already reveals apocalyptic characteristics through its densely wrought musical architecture. The Scherzo, driven by an almost mechanistic insistence, has often been interpreted as anticipating the onset of the industrial age. In the final Adagio, Bruckner reaches an extraordinary level of harmonic tension, culminating in strikingly dissonant eruptions before subsiding into a state of serene, transcendent calm. The Ninth Symphony remains an enigma: a work whose compositional audacity projects far beyond its time, pointing toward the aesthetic horizons of the twentieth century.
